iPod vs laptop vs PSP vs …

A friend of mine is flying over from the United States at the end of the month, and has kindly (or rather foolishly) agreed to bring some goodies for me, if I buy them in advance. So I’m left with wrestling over what to get myself and benefit from the ridiculous US/UK exchange rate – even though I can’t necessarily afford it at the moment. So should I get:

  • a new slightly bigger laptop, even though I’ve already got a Core Duo laptop with 1GB RAM and a reasonably good graphics card, which I got 18 months ago for about $2000?
  • Perhaps the new-fangled iPod Touch? The trouble is, I already have an ancient black-and-white old iPod from a bygone era (which I literally sweated over when I bought it 3 years ago), and I don’t use it that much except when I’m driving in the wilds of Wales where I can’t get hold of any radio stations. However, it does look dead flash and swish.
  • Perhaps a Sony Playstation Portable? With the slight flaw that I don’t spend that much time travelling on trains any more, so chances to use it would be quite limited. And besides, I have my existing (or a new!) laptop if I wanted to play games.
  • Maybe I could get a new swisher smart mobile phone, but there’s no guarantee they’d even work over here!

Of course, the sensible option would be to save some money instead, especially as there’s no desperate need for a new gadget. And since I already have an LCD TV, a Playstation 3 and a Nintendo Wii, I already look like the cliched bachelor with far too much money and not enough people on his hands.

But then again, how often can you almost get a laptop for half-price, and get US$2.1 for a mere English pound? It’s a bargain, I tell ya – a bargain!

What do you think?

What’s so great about the video iPod?

Geofftech is one of those who were “lucky” enough to soak up all the free food and wine at the launch of the video iPod. Which seems to be just about the only good thing about the anti-climatic announcement of the video iPod.

The screen is tiny, there’s no widescreen and as far as I can tell, there’s no option for users to upload their own video content or home movies to it. So it’s still a music player with a hard drive that can also do video. But that’s it.

Compare that to the Playstation Portable. It’s got a proper screen for watching video. It can play games and music. You can upload your own video content. The only thing you can’t do is bolt on a hard drive to it – or buy American TV shows at US$2 an episode to watch.

I think I know which one I’d get. If I had any spare money.

iPods – style over substance, but god-damnit, what style!

As anyone who’s been hanging around me will know for the last two weeks, I’ve been agonising – AGONISING – over whether to waste good old-fashioned dollars on an iPod, or a PDA/iPaq. In other words, whether to go for a well-designed, and trendy but hideously expensive way to listen to music – or to go for a market-price-led item that’ll be useful and allow me to maintain my contacts and calendar.

After a sweat-inducing moment at CompUSA and Circuit City, I walked away with an open-box 15Gig iPod for US$219 – which is a veritable bargain compared to UK prices.

Having loaded 4G of MP3s onto it, I have to say it’s quite possibly one of the coolest devices ever. Fundamentally useless unless you want to listen to music – but the music sounds great, syncing is a relative doddle and it just says use me. The only fault I’ve found so far is that the earphones crap out on a high volume – but I guess I just need to buy replacement earphones if I want that whiteness “Look at me! I have an iPod and am ultra cool – please mug me!” functionality.

A few questions:

What is the difference between a first-gen, second-gen and third-gen version of iPods, in terms of usability?

How do I link iTunes up with a blog?

There must be easier ways to sync it up with a calendar!
