Are things in Bradford this bad?
by andrew on May.20, 2004, under Life
And to think I went to University there. Although the only racial abuse I had there were from the ‘Asian trash’, as opposed to the ‘white trash’ here in Cardiff. Ah well, trash is trash I guess.
Never mind where is the love, where is the snow?
by andrew on Jan.28, 2004, under Cardiff, Life, Wales
All week, I’ve been hearing about how we’ll all be drowning in snow come Wednesday. Given the two weeks of emotional trauma my friends have been through, snow is just what we all needed. It brings out the child in you, and anything that can make the urban landscape look clean and pristine has got to be a good thing.
However, it’s 11am in Cardiff, the sun is shining and I can’t see any snow anywhere. This only perpetuates my perception that Cardiff somehow lives in its own parallel universe, where the normal rules of what happens in the rest of the UK and the world, just doesn’t apply. It’s as if I’m trapped in a Twilight Cardiff Zone (cue theme tune). Grrr.
Do Americans get irony?
by andrew on Jan.27, 2004, under Funny, Life
Even the BBC says that Americans get irony. But it’d have been nice if they could give examples of American comedy that uses irony.
However, the stellar quote in this article is:
“Americans do get irony, but to them there’s a time and a place for it … Americans, and I include in this my mom, take themselves too seriously to appreciate irony in everyday conversation. They don’t have time for it.” - David Freeman, US comedy writer
Now can someone please explain irony to me? With examples?
Want an English accent? Have a stroke!
by andrew on Nov.25, 2003, under Life
According to this BBC News report, a stroke has given an American woman a British accent - despite the fact she’s never been there. Well, that’s one way of getting the ladeez in the States …
Being British-Asian…
by andrew on Sep.08, 2003, under Life
Not that I’m Asian (at least in the British sense of the word), but an interesting article on being British-Asian contains this rather explosive, if no doubt truthful comment:
“Is Hindi a British language? I’ll tell you for nothing that more people speak it here than Welsh.”
