Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

One of the great advantages of going to America on holiday is the chance to see films almost before the great American public have formed a consensus on it, thus biasing your decision as to whether to see it or not.
I’ve just come back from seeing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - and while the subject matter (ditching memories of painful experiences or relationships) is almost guaranteed to have everyone retreating inside their own memories at times, it still makes for an almost heart-warming film. The Carreyisms are kept to a minimum - except when Kate Winslet makes a dig at Carrey’s puppy-doggish face. The visuals are delightfully quirky and surreal (as you’d expect from Mr. Gondry) - although I imagine it would help to follow the plot if you’ve seen any number of those Star Trek episodes that take place in someone’s memories or head.
It has a delightfully low-budget arthouse feel to it - so it comes as a bit of a shock to read thru the end credits to find that Carrey/Winslet had a driver and hair stylist each. I mean, this is Miss Kate Winslet, who allegedly shops at Tescos and Waitrose! Oh, and will someone please tell Kirsten Dunst to stop doing her schoolgirl-esque “I’ve got a crush on you” look!
