Damnit, I hate it when I have to eat my words and say that Revenge Of The Sith works on all counts. A very neat trick considering you pretty much know what the entire plot of the film is.
This is probably because alongside all the action eye candy, the characters are far more real. You can empathise with how Anakin makes the choices he makes, out of love, but in the process betrays his friends, and the people he loves. Much like in the ultimate tragic romance The English Patient. Plus, Hayden Christensen actually manages to make the character something more than a sulky Akira-esque teenager – for the most part.
The parallels between what happens to Anakin/Darth and Padme are particularly affecting, as is the parallels between the Empire and what is going on globally today – although this hasn’t exactly endeared him to American right-wing bloggers.
Of course, the action eyecandy is simply astounding – and I don’t know how they managed it, but the action special effects sequences seem far more real and less computerized this time, which makes a change from the uber-Photoshop all over Attack of the Clones.
In short, go see it. Although I doubt Lucas needs your money!
