What was the Welsh election like for you?

Because I spent most of the evening helping out BBC Wales, I only have a vague awareness of what happened in England (thus missing class moments like this and Nick Griffin, leader of the racist British National Party, wearing anti-racist wristbands), and my knowledge of Welsh parliamentary politics has now expanded exponentially. Alas.

The Blaenau Gwent result. You can look at it as a victory for local people over national faceless decision makers. Or a victory for parochial sexism. Still, one can’t deny the passions. Even the Conservative MP’s staff were voting for the independent candidate!

The new Tory MP for Clwyd West, David Jones. He must have the poshest voice I’ve ever heard from a Tory MP – and that’s saying something. What is he doing representing Clwyd West?!

Ynys Mon/Anglesey. For some reason, all the TV camera crews were showing sepia-toned images from the election count. Not too sure what that says about the island.

Betty Williams of Conwy. Thanks to Miss R, I am now one person away from a Labour MP who got the newsroom slightly excited with her moaning about an amazingly bitter campaign – and when it came down to it, she was just referring to Michael Howard calling Blair a liar and hyping up MRSAs. Isn’t that what the cut and thrust of parliamentary politics is all about these days?
