Hollywood vs. the BBC

Hollywood vs. the BBC

All my life I’ve craved a proper surround-sound stereo system, with a sub-woofer to match. Finally, after seven years, I succumbed and bought one from Richer Sounds for the bargain price of £130.

After an afternoon of wiring up the speakers, putting them in the right place, hiding the wires (I was in hogs’ heaven!) I put the system through its paces with a selection of DVDs I have.

I put in the best of Hollywood action cinema – The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, Terminator 2, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and The Rock.

Alas, sad as it may seem, none of them rocked and shook my socks as much as the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix on the Doctor Who: Resurrection of the Daleks DVD.

The theme tune rocked, and pounded, The explosions were stunning. if I closed my eyes, i would have sworn I was hearing a great Hollywood production, instead of a 1984 sci-fi TV production on a miniscule budget, with visual effects to match. Amazing.

My ears are still ringing.

  • I gotta tell you that I built my first home cinema system in 98 and one of the best DVDs I ever owned that really showed off the system was Godzilla. There's a scene where Godzilla is running round NYC with helicopters… wow.

Also, Das Boot. And Signs. They are both surround to extreme effect.
