The Observer | Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us – to quote another film, this alleged Pentagon report pretty much paints a doomsday scenario that recreates the “worst parts of the Bible” if global warming is allowed to proceed at its current rate.
“A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.”
Of course, it’s probably all too late to do anything about it.
Personally speaking, I thought I was a reasonable person as far as the environment is concerned. I recycle, I don’t have a car (at least not at the moment), and I use renewable energy sources.
And then I did this Guardian Carbon Calculator survey to calculate my carbon calculator. Based on the fact that I tend to holiday outside Europe, it calculates that in order to reduce global warming, I must reduce my carbon emissions by 718%. Which is a pretty damn neat trick by anyone’s standards.
What on earth is one man – or even a community – to do against those kinds of odds and standards to stop what’s happening or going to happen?
Here’s to 2020.
